Donatien Alphonse Francois Sadeはパリに生まれ、20代のとき精神異常の徴候が出始めた。この異常は彼のスキャンダル、残酷な行動、性的品行に表れている。サドは彼の著作や行為により、1768年から1803年のほとんどを刑務所で過ごした。1803年に保護施設に移され、そこで1814年に死んだ。
